Walking on a beautiful January day in an historical park where the Civil War battle of Bull Run was fought, Dewi emerged from his swim in a pond.

My “love affair” with Boxers started the day I was born.  They have been my “fur” companions for nearly 60 years.  As a child, I spent hours looking at pictures of Salgray Boxers.  I remember seeing a picture of the famous “Fashion Plate” and dreaming of owning that beautiful brindle.  Well that never happened, although we later did meet Phyllis Hamilburg and purchased a grandson of Salgray Battle Chief, a big beautiful fawn.

When I first saw a picture of Dewi, I had the same reaction…I just had to have him in my home.  My dream was realized.  And what a boxer he turned out to be!

Besides his obvious looks, he has a wonderful personality.  He plays with dogs large and small, loves everyone and every animal he meets.  Not much of a watch dog, but I have other Boxers that do that task quite well.

Now that he is finished, his next “job” is waiting for him.  He is going to be a therapy dog in a nursing home. I realized his talent at the benching show in Harrisburg, when a young man who was extremely handicapped came by in his motorized wheel chair.  Dewi greeted him with the best of manners.  He sat next to that man and put his head in his lap.

The man could not talk, nor pat Dewi as he was so crippled he could not lift his hands.  But the smile that man had, and the joy he felt, when Dewi did not shy away from him, was worth so much more than his confirmation championship.  I realized how special this dog is.

I am proud he is the first natural-eared UK-born champion in the United States
and I am so grateful to have him in my life.
